Sports Massage and Physiotherapy

Sports massage is the systemic manipulation of the soft tissues of the body for therapeutic purposes to aid individuals participating in physical activity, massage can be used to treat physical problems not just from sport, but from many physical activities used on a daily basis such as lifting and walking. The majority of the population could benefit from regular massage therapy as it can also promote relaxation, correct physical dysfunction and promote a positive feeling of well being.

Sport massage therapy should be included as a vital section to every athlete ’ s regime, ranging from their pre-performance / competition regimes to the post-performance and training treatments. With its main aim being to restore normal functional activity to the tissue of the musculoskeletal system, the benefits of sport massage therapy are:-

Mechanical
  • Stimulation of soft tissue.
  • Stretching of the soft tissue to improve flexibility.
  • Breaking down scar tissue.
  • Correction of posture and limb alignment to improve body awareness.
  • Reducing tension and associated pain.
  • Reducing soreness and pain after an activity.

Physiological

  • Improved circulation via stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system to increase the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the injured tissue, therefore promoting healing.

  • Sedative effect on the parasympathetic nervous system to reduce tension, induce relaxation and relieve pain.
